Gervinho’s spectacular finish provided the Ivory Coast with an important win to launch their African Nations tournament against Togo.
The tournament favourites were far from impressive, but did enough to secure a kickstart to their group campaign.
I was particularly interested to view Gervinho’s performance for Les Éléphants. The Ivorian forward has come in for much criticism this season due to some far than impressive displays for Arsenal.
Gervinho was not outstanding against Togo, but then again neither were any of his team mates as both sides struggled in the roaring Rustenburg heat.
Gervinho was however, involved in both goals for his nation- demonstrating confidence to run at the Togolese defence. Gervinho constantly troubled left-back Dakonam Djene, fooling him on numerous occasions with a dropped shoulder and swift movement with the ball at his feet.
