Many Arsenal fans were relieved when Marouane Chamakh left the club for West Ham United on loan. Even though Wenger didn’t ultimately bring in a replacement, Chamakh had gone so far down in the thoughts of fans that his exit was met with mockery and relief. He’d just not been doing it for Arsenal and the striker, who turns 30 this month, had already been judged a failure since he arrived at the club in 2010. Chamakh had never been a top goalscorer in Ligue 1, so to expect him to be able to improve that in the Premier League was a big ask. He wasn’t a young player with potential ahead of him and it’s fair to question why he was brought to the club in the first place.
